In the context of the International Women’s Day and the League of Nations Centenary initiative led by UNOG to mark 100 Years of Multilateralism in Geneva, the UN, UNWomen, UNESCO Liaison Office and the University for Peace, together with the Permanent Mission of Jordan organized an event on the role of women in peace and multilateralism on 8 March. The event took place in the margins of the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Estonia together with 22 others co-sponsored the event. The Deputy Permanent Representative, Anneli Vares commended the organizers for the timely topic and emphasized the importance of women`s role in women, peace and security agenda but also in wider multilateral system. Estonia has been a long standing supporter of implementation of the Security Council Resolution 1325 and its follow-up resolutions. Running for the UN Security Council for the period of 2020-21, Estonia affirms a long-term commitment to take more responsibility in promoting international peace and security and ensure a more inclusive society based on the rule of law. In this context we commit to paying special attention to the women, peace and security agenda. Noting that while only 10 per cent of UN Member States have a female Head of State or Government, Estonia is among the few to have a female Head of State and could very probably also get a female Head of Government.
