Estonia thanks the UN High Commissioner for her update on human rights situation in Belarus.
Estonia fully aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union.
Violence against people in Belarus has lasted for over half a year, and there is no visible solution in sight. Authorities refuse any dialogue with citizens. Following the crackdown on peaceful protests in the streets, the targeted repression of human rights defenders, independent journalists, media workers and bloggers by security structures has grown.
The rule of law system in Belarus is on the brink of full collapse. The authorities disregard constitutional guarantees and international obligations. The judicial system is unable to provide adequate legal protection for the victims, while focusing on repressions instead.
The law enforcement authorities enjoy full impunity, whereas ordinary citizens are faced with injustice, unfair trials and disproportionate penalties. Torture and ill-treatment are used to intimidate people. The unprecedented brutality and mass violence can and will not be tolerated.
We strongly condemn all human rights violations and reiterate our repeated requests to immediately and unconditionally release all arbitrarily detained persons, including political prisoners and hold perpetrators to account.
