Estonia has nominated Nele Leosk as its candidate for the position of Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“I strongly believe that the United Nations, and International Telecommunication Union in particular, have a unique role to play in ensuring that digital transformation benefits everyone. We need to connect, but we also need to move from connectivity to impact and deliver results. We must empower societies and equip every country with skills and knowledge to shape their own digital future. We must build solid digital foundations to transform technologies for lasting opportunities!”

If elected, her vision for ITU-D will focus on four priorities for implementation:

Connect — connect the unconnected and move beyond infrastructure to support countries in turning connectivity into inclusive economic and societal progress.

Empower — strengthen local digital ecosystems, institutions, and skills so countries can sustainably lead their own transformation journeys.

Transform — support countries in establishing strong digital foundations to confidently adopt AI and emerging technologies.

Deliver — build a stronger, cohesive, professional and impact-driven ITU by deepening collaboration across ITU’s bureaus, regional offices, and broader UN system.
