Universal Periodic Review of the Sultanate of Oman –  21 January, 2021 – Intervention by the delegation of Estonia

Estonia welcomes the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to its third UPR.

We welcome Oman fulfilling its commitment made during the last cycle of its UPR and acceding to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. We encourage Oman to accede also to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Estonia notes positively the withdrawal of the reservation to Art. 15 (4) of the Convention on the

Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the clarification of provisions of the Child Law.

Estonia would like to make the following recommendations to Oman:

  • Review the Penal Code and remove all restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly;
  • Establish a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty;
  • Withdraw all remaining reservations to CEDAW.

Estonia would also like to reiterate its earlier recommendation for Oman to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and incorporate its provisions into national legislation.

We would like to wish the delegation of Oman a successful review meeting.

Thank you!
