Genf, 15 juuni 2017
Mr. President,
Distinguished SpecialRapporteur,
Estonia fully alignsitself with the statement made by the EU.
We would like to thankthe Special Rapporteur for her oral update on the situation of human rights inMyanmar.
We note the efforts ofthe Government of Myanmar, headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, for nationalreconciliation and reforms for the country’s democratic transition. However, weremain concerned about the slow pace of the reforms. We reiterate our worries aboutthe ongoing conflict in parts of the country and reports of violations ofinternational human rights and humanitarian law. Estonia remains, in particular, concerned about the situation of the members of Myanmar’s Rohingya community inthe Rakhine state, and about those who have been displaced and thus face therisk of being re-victimized. Furthermore, we call the government to providefull access to the international humanitarian organizations to vulnerablepeople in Rakhine state who are in need vital humanitarian assistance.
Mr President,
We welcome the creationof the independent international fact-finding mission on Myanmar at the HumanRights Council 34th session. We wish its members success in fulfillingthe mandate. We encourage the Government of Myanmar to cooperate fully with thefact-finding mission, including making available the findings of the domesticinvestigation and other relevant information, and granting the mission full andunrestricted access to all areas. Cooperation with the mission will assist thegovernment’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and holding thoseresponsible for human rights violations accountable.
Thank you.
